Sanford Fieldhouse

Designed for the modem athlete, the 86,000 square foot Fieldhouse provides local athletes with 62,000 square feet of professional grade Field Turf. The project includes indoor sports fields, tracks, training areas, and large, onsite physical and occupational therapy suites. Designed as an integral piece of the 162 acre Sanford Health Sports Complex, the Fieldhouse will be the center of their wellness and power programs and will serve the region’s youth sports teams, adult recreational sports enthusiasts and professional athletes alike.

As the first of many facilities, the owner required an iconic design. The exterior design pays homage to the ancient Coliseum in Rome with its towering pillars and embedded images of skilled Roman athletes. The building is laid out in an efficient manner to reduce unnecessary circulation space and development impacts to the site. Gage Brothers was able to add depth and details to the building facade by incorporating multiple finishes and layers of precast, allowing the design team to achieve the ancient Coliseum look with a pre-insulated panel. For the columns and entablatures, architectural precast cladding was attached to the wall panels, adding additional depth and detail.

The structural frame is a Butler pre-engineered metal building. In order to make precast work with the structural system, Gage Brothers had to design special connections to accommodate the building’s movement. The x-bracing of the metal building was eliminated by using the precast as the lateral resistance frame. This fast-track job consisted of over 300 pieces of precast and went from initial design meeting to project completion and owner occupancy in less than 7 months.
